Lark Ascending & Protecting Veil, EAChO/Graham Walker/Martin Hughes

Sat 8 November 2014

St John's College

The region’s premier chamber orchestra continues its 2014-15 season with a programme featuring one of the greatest of modern British works.
John Tavener described The Protecting Veil for cello and strings as ‘a lyrical ikon in sound, rather than wood, and using the cellist to paint rather than a brush’. Our artist is the local virtuoso Graham Walker who will perform this mystical, meditative, and mellifluous work, a cello concerto in all but name. He exchanges roles with Martin Hughes, the violin soloist for

The Lark Ascending, Vaughan Williams’s quintessentially English masterpiece in which the silvery, soaring birdsong combines with English folk song.

The Serenade for Strings by Josef Suk (1874-1935) was composed in response to his professor’s request for a more cheerful work. When the professor is Dvorak, the model is obvious. Yet Suk’s work is original, demanding, exciting, and inspiring in its own right. All in the beautiful setting of St John’s College Chapel, the evening promises to be an uplifting and memorable event.

Cost: £18 (£15 concessions); £5 under 18s
