Java Minute Lecture Series: This woman’s work: Childbirth and the human skeleton

Wed 23 January 2019

Newnham College

Sarah-Louise Decrausaz is a PhD candidate in biological anthropology in the Department of Archaeology at Cambridge. Her research examines how the hips develop as a girl grows to better understand why childbirth is so challenging for humans. Using medical imaging to gather data on skeletal growth in living girls, her work shows the impact of early life nutrition on the development of the birth canal and how this part of the skeleton grows alongside soft tissue. Her work holistically integrates research on human evolution, growth and nutrition and maternal health to investigate one of the most important moments in human life
