World Book Night: Crime and Cocktails in the Library

Join Cambridge University Library for a KILLER NIGHT of mystery-solving, crime fiction and cocktails!

Medical science comedy cabaret

Sat 22 June 2013

MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology

Join entertaining scientists from the LMB and beyond to explore the lighter side of research through demonstrations, chat, jokes and music.

Compere and science comedian Steve Cross (founder of Bright Club and Science Showoff) will take the steering wheel for the evening, as you enjoy a drink, a laugh and maybe a little bit of learning. There will be a pay bar and free jokes until 9.30pm.

The "acts" are:

Andrew Holding - Once a chemist, Andrew will explain why he moved on to something much safer (biology) and far less likely to cause an diplomatic incident…

Lia Chappell - Lia will talk us through the trials and travails of working with malaria parasites in the lab and the start, middle and end of doing a PhD.

Ginny Smith - Ginny will explore how you know that your body belongs to you and what happens when this sense goes wrong… She’ll also show how you can play tricks on your brain, and how this can help those who suffer from 'phantom limb syndrome' after losing a limb.

Greg Jefferis - Greg will provide an entertaining tour around sex, food and smell (in fruit flies)!

Graham Fraser - Graham will round off the evening with some musings on public perceptions and media portrayals of Alzheimer’s disease research.
