Clare Hall Korea Symposium: Reflections on the Sunshine Policy and its Relevance today

The Republic of Korea and its efforts for a peaceful relationship with its neighbour, the People's Republic of Korea, has become of huge strategic interest in international politics. This year, it will be just over 25 years since Kim Dae-Jung spent time at Clare Hall, a college in the University of Cambridge as a Visiting Fellow. This period of seclusion and intense intellectual work helped him craft what became known as the Sunshine Policy, and ultimately lead to him receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000.
We are marking this with a commemoration and reflection of Kim Dae-Jung and his legacy against the background of current peace endeavours, with a symposium chaired by Ambassador Ra Jong-Yil on the 13 November 2018: Reflections on the Sunshine Policy and its relevance today – 25 years after Kim Dae-Jung's stay at Clare Hall. Besides Ambassador Ra, the panel includes Martin Uden, former Ambassador to the Republic of Korea; Jonathan Powell, CEO and founder of Inter Mediate; Christopher Green, Leiden University; and Tristan Webb, Kent University.
The symposium is kindly sponsored by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Baikbong Research Institute and is taking place at 5 pm at the Elton Bowring room, Clare College followed by a drinks reception at 6.30 pm at Clare Hall. Both events are open to the public and pre-booking is essential.

The drinks reception afterwards will be held at Clare Hall, Herschel Road, CB3 9AL - a 3 minute walk from the lecture hall. |
