Three genetic parents: yes or no?
Tue 4 November 2014
Christ's College
The issue of mitochondrial DNA Transfer - leading to a birth that is often called a ‘baby with three parents’ - remains a subject of ethical contestation. This is despite debate going back over several years during which 3 scientific reviews, a major public consultation and an ethics review have occurred. The Government has now pressed the green light on allowing this technique to progress to the next stage. Regulations have been published and are being consulted on which will allow MPs to debate the issue in the near future. The outcome of a yes vote would be that the technique would now be allowed in law thus allowing clinicians and researchers to apply to the HFEA for a license to offer this technique to patients for the very first time. Some of the scientific, medical, social and ethical issues raised will be discussed at this seminar.
