Stutterer by Thomson and Craighead

Stutterer + afternoon of activities

Thu 3 November 2016 - Sat 21 January 2017

Wellcome Genome Campus

On the final weekend of our exhibition, Stutterer, join us for a range of activities throughout the afternoon, from curator talks to hands-on DNA-based science activities and a tour of the Wellcome Genome Campus.

We welcome you to visit Stutterer, the current exhibition at the Wellcome Genome Campus’ Cultural Zone. Created by Thomson & Craighead, Stutterer is an instructional artwork - a poetry machine that uses the human genome like a music score to play back a self-assembling video montage spanning the thirteen years of the Human Genome Project.

The four nucleotide bases of DNA are represented by the letters A, C, G, and T and each letter becomes a word plucked by the artists from English language television broadcast during the Human Genome Project. Stutterer highlights the scale of biological information contained in each of our cells - if the work played continuously it would run for sixty years. But it also highlights the rich period of history that was the backdrop to this monumental scientific project; from the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990, to the beginning of the Iraq War in 2003.

The Wellcome Genome Campus is the UK home of the Human Genome Project and so is uniquely placed to explore this story, and objects from the Human Genome Project are exhibited alongside Stutterer.

The Cultural Zone is open to the public on the evening of the first Thursday of the month. This a chance to see our latest exhibition as well as explore our permanent displays. The venue bar will also be open for you to enjoy a drink.

We also welcome group visits to the Campus outside of these times. For more information please visit our website: http://publicengagement.wellcomegenomecampus.org/visits
