On Wednesday 16th April, George Gömöri will introduce his latest book, 'Polishing October: New and Selected Poems'.
George (György) Gömöri, Emeritus Fellow of Darwin College, Cambridge, taught Polish and Hungarian Literature at the university from 1969-2001. A Hungarian-born poet and translator, George was instrumental in organising the student march that escalated into the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Together with Alan Tongue and Jocelyn Charity, George founded the Cambridge-Szeged Society, of which he was the first chairman. This year, George celebrates his 80th birthday with three publications: his book of poetry, Polishing October: New and Selected Poems, Rózsalovaglás (Riding with Roses) a new selection of his poems in Hungarian, and The Polish Swan Triumphant, essays on Polish literature from Kochanowski to Norwid.
