Mind over matter
Fri 21 March 2014
McCrum Lecture Theatre
This early evening talk is about 12 of Britain’s oldest brain donors who agreed to be photographed and interviewed about their lives and involvement in brain research.
The talk, by Professor Bronwyn Parry (King's College London)and artist Ania Dabrowska, will feature images and sound recordings collected as part of a major science-art collaboration called Mind Over Matter. It will be followed by a panel discussion featuring top scientists involved in the search for cures for dementia and members of the audience will be invited to make comments.
Why dementia matters
Latest health data, from the University of Cambridge Cognitive Function and Ageing Study, indicates that dementia affects around 670,000 people in the UK, and internationally, it has become one of the most significant public health concerns, as populations age around the world. Care and services for those with dementia need to be recalibrated, underpinned by research and medical evidence, to ease the burden of the disease, within the context of extreme pressure on budgets. New action in the UK will be triggered by our G8 December 2013 Dementia Summit, so this topic could not be more relevant or timely.
Mind over Matter
Mind Over Matter is a science - art collaboration between Dr Bronwyn Parry, Professor at King’s College London and artist, Ania Dabrowska, about dementia and the contribution that a unique cadre of twelve brain donors, aged between 84 and over 100, will make to understanding dementia.
The collaboration draws on the internationally important population studies directed by Professor Carol Brayne at the Cambridge Institute of Public Health. Prevalence and incidence estimates from these studies are used for national and international projections and planning on dementia.
