The art of the Grand Tour
Tue 29 April 2014 - Tue 27 May 2014
Institute of Continuing Education
The aim of this course is to examine various aspects of the Grand Tour: its origins in religious pilgrimage; its importance as an artistic and cultural phenomenon during the 18th century; and its particular association with British aristocracy and the development of the ‘grand style’ in British art.
We will focus upon the significance of Italian culture to the Englishman abroad and in particular the impact of his patronage upon portraiture and landscape painting. Relevant works by Italian and British artists associated with the Grand Tour will be discussed throughout.

13 May: The artist abroad
