Exploring Flowers in Art & Culture: Chrysanthemums
Fri 21 April 2017
Botanic Garden
'If you would be happy for life, grow chrysanthemums' runs an ancient Chinese proverb - reflecting the high status of this magnificent flower in the Orient. Associated with Emperors and Geishas, it was depicted on delicate porcelain and embroidered onto silk cloth. Appearing in Europe in the 18th century they came to dominate flower shows in America and England with fancy mop headed varieties a world away from the golden daisy of ancient China. It was beloved by the Impressionist painters, although the French artist Fantin Latour still clung to the original simple yellow form. Associated with both the coming of death and the power of life, this session will explore the extraordinary diversity of the humble 'mum'.
