Composition workshop: school years 3-6

Fri 15 June 2012

Music, Faculty of

Jeremy Thurlow and the University of Cambridge New Music Group will lead an interactive composition workshop exploring different approaches to composing and different ways to write for different combinations of instruments.

This workshop will launch the Cambridge Young Composer of the Year Competition 2012-13 and will focus on the instruments included in this year’s competition brief. Students will have the opportunity to ask the performers about writing for their instruments, see demos of their ideas and get top tips and advice from competition judge and composer, Jeremy Thurlow. Topics covered will include how to begin writing your own music? Things to think about when writing for this year’s combination of instruments, and how to tackle problems.

Cost: free

Enquiries and booking

Booking is recommended for this event.

The workshop is open to all keen musicians in school years 3-6 in Cambridgeshire, regardless of their experience of composing. Even if students don't want to take part in the competition, the advice will be useful for composition generally and small groups are welcome as part of a school trip.
