Ver Heyden de Lancey Medico-Legal Lecture 2016

Fri 5 February 2016

Faculty of Law

The Centre for Law, Medicine and Life Sciences invites you to attend the 2016 Ver Heyden de Lancey Medico-Legal Lecture.

The speaker will be Mr James Badenoch QC who acted as counsel for the successful appellant before the UK Supreme Court in Montgomery v Lanarkshire Health Board [2015] UKSC 11. The decision concerned a medical practitioner's duty to disclose information to their patient as part of securing the patient's consent to undergo medical treatment. The Supreme Court decision in Montgomery overruled the 30-year old authority of the House of Lords decision in Sidaway. The speaker will address the controversial issue of whether and to what extent this represents a dramatic change in the law, and the future implications for medical practice, liability and regulation.

The topic is of great practical importance for clinicians and will be of considerable interest for lawyers (particularly medical or tort lawyers) as well as those working in medical ethics, sociology and related fields. The lecture will include a Q&A session at the end.
