Word Sound Power Blood Earth Project - film screening | spoken word | discussion

Mon 4 August 2014

Alison Richard Building

Screening of award-winning short film documenting resistance to mining in rural India. Followed by spoken word and discussion with Taru Dalmia (Delhi Sultanate) - song-writer, vocalist + co-founder of Word Sound Power.

In the mid-1990s large deposits of bauxite were discovered near the Khonda tribal village of Kucheipadar in Orissa, India. Soon after, the district became a conflict zone. A vibrant people’s movement blossomed with songs serving as a uniting force in the anti-mining struggle. With a mobile music studio, Word Sound Power joined local singers and musicians in Kucheipadar for a new type of collaboration.

The result combines revolutionary songs in Oriya and Kui tribal language with dub poetry by Delhi Sultanate and electronic music composed by Chris McGuinness. A film by Kush Badhwar documents the collaborations. Blood Earth explores the relationship between music, resistance, and cultural responses to violence via word and sound.
