Languages and Cultures: sampling Chinese and Spanish
Sun 25 January 2015
Institute of Continuing Education
The day will focus on two languages (Spanish and Chinese), with both language and cultural input. We hope it will provide an opportunity to revisit a language you already know and to ‘taste’ a new one, or to ‘taste’ two new languages!
The morning will be devoted to Spanish. It will start with a lecture about a Spanish film, in English, accompanied by clips from the film and will invite discussion. The second session will focus on the Spanish language, revisiting some of the dialogue in the film. It will be conducted in both Spanish and English, and will serve as an introduction to some and revision for others.
The afternoon will be devoted to Chinese. It will consist of an introductory and interactive lecture on aspects of Chinese culture and Chinese characters. This will be followed by a taster lesson in Chinese which will provide all participants with the opportunity to exchange some everyday greetings and to recognise the role of tones in spoken Chinese.
Tea, coffee and a light sandwich lunch are included in the price.
Cost: £75
