Buddhism in the new era: the path of Chinese Buddhism - past, present and future
Sun 23 November 2014
King's College Chapel
The rise of China as an economic power has been accompanied by a resurgence of religious activity in all walks of life. Secularisation theses have foundered against the reality of a contemporary China in which modernity and religion are intimately connected. As China reaches out to the world, its relationship to Buddhism - an import from India retooled in China - becomes even more important to understand. The Venerable Master Xuecheng is the Spiritual Leader of Longquan Temple, Beijing, which has attracted graduates from China’s top universities, and is also famous for its engagement with new media technologies. He has thus been dubbed the ‘Blogging Abbot’ in China. He recently spoke at the World Economic Forum, where he gave a talk entitled From Confucius to C-Pop. At the same time, the Venerable Master Xuecheng is the Vice President of the Buddhist Association of China; he is thus particularly well-placed to share his thoughts on the role which Buddhism plays in modern China
