Susan Galbraith is Executive Vice President of Oncology R&D at AstraZeneca, with global accountability for the Oncology portfolio from discovery through to late-stage development. Over her career, Susan has been instrumental in bringing eight new medicines to patients, four of which are now blockbusters. A Clinical Oncologist by background, Susan trained in medicine at Manchester and Cambridge Universities and has a PhD from the University of London. She also holds an honorary Doctorate of Medical Science from the Institute of Cancer Research and is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Her focus on mentoring young female scientists has helped improve diversity in AstraZeneca and she is a strong supporter of UK life-sciences. Susan has established important collaborations with Cancer Research UK and UK based investigators, and serves as a member of the Institute of Cancer Research Scientific Advisory Board and on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Cancer Research.

The Biennial Professor Ruth Lynden-Bell Lecture has been launched to recognise Ruth’s contribution to Murray Edwards College, the education of women and the role of women in chemistry.

Professor Ruth Lynden-Bell is a chemist who has made crucial advancements in our knowledge of the properties of liquids and disordered solids — solids with abnormal structures. She has pioneered new techniques over her career, identifying previously unknown key physical processes using simulation and theoretical development. During her early career she applied statistics to the properties of liquids and disordered solids. Later on, she used pioneering computer simulation to test theories and widen the possible areas of study. Of particular interest is her work on the interaction between particles that are dissolving and the solvent around them.

Ruth was a Fellow of Murray Edwards College (then New Hall) from 1962 to 1965, returning in 1972, In 1995, she became the Professor of Condensed Matter Simulation at The Queen’s University, Belfast. She served as Acting President of Murray Edwards College.
