London 2012: unlimited global alchemy

Fri 22 June 2012 - Sat 18 August 2012

Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology

Unlimited Global Alchemy is an art exhibition based around the themes of survival, resilience and human fragility in the context of HIV and AIDS.

This exhibition, part of Unlimited, a pioneering programme celebrating the arts and culture by disabled and deaf arts as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, features a series of large scale paintings, sketches and portrait films. The display aims to create connections between peoples, destroy barriers and move forward universal human rights.

It is a collaborative effort between Rachel Gadsden, a British visual artist and winner of the 2009 DaDaAward for Artist of the Year, and the South Africa based Bambanani Group, which since 2002 has been working to support people who are HIV positive.

Much of the artwork was created during a six-week residency at the SOBEIT Studios in Cape Town. Several portrait films, shot by director Cliff Bestall, were also created at the same time.
