Intricate Bronze Art from Igbo-Uwu

Return to Igbo-Ukwu

Wed 17 February 2016

McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research

This is the story of two Cambridge researchers returning to Igbo-Ukwu a 9th Century archaeological site in Nigeria, excavated in 1959 and 1964 by Thurstan Shaw. Shaw and the Igbo team discovered hundreds of intricate sophisticated bronze, copper and iron art objects (ca 900 AD). Thousands of beads, textiles, ivory artwork and beautiful pottery were discovered. But this archaeological work was interrupted by the Biafran War in 1967 and was never completed. In late 2015, the Igbo-Ukwu families and the Traditional Ruler of Igbo-Ukwu welcomed two researchers, Pamela Jane Smith Shaw and Marcus Brittain. This talk will describe that visit and hopes for the future. A small Nigerian lunch will be served before the talk.
