JS Bach’s influence loomed large in the lives of his four composer sons – and yet the music and biographies of each are surprisingly diverse. Carl Philipp Emanuel was fiercely loyal to his father’s legacy, and undoubtedly inherited his compositional verve. The famous Concerto in A major for cello demonstrates a broad musical palette. Johann Christian, meanwhile, lived a cosmopolitan life organising regular public concerts which featured his works. Wilhelm Friedemann, conversely, never escaped his father’s shadow and tragically, the majority of Johann Christoph Friedrich’s work was destroyed in the Second World War.
