Pilgrimage to Canterbury
Wed 27 October 2010
St Mark's Community Centre
Canterbury was the most successful pilgrimage centre in Northern Europe from the murder of Becket in 1170 to the Reformation Emperors, Kings, the great and the good, the poor and the sick all trekked to the city, yet Canterbury was quite small - how did it cope?
The Cathedral also performed many other important functions apart from Pilgrimage. How did it manage? This day-school will ask why was the cult of Becket so successful, how was the building enlarged and adapted to cope and where did all the pilgrims stay?
Cost: £45
