Sun 14 February 2016
West Road Concert Hall
CUJO are delighted to announce the guest artist for this year's West Road concert. We will be in concert with Mark Armstrong, a renowned jazz trumpeter and the current Artistic and Musical Director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.
CUJO is Cambridge University’s premiere jazz ensemble bringing together the best jazz musicians in the university. The group is 20-strong and focuses on performing jazz arrangements by leading big bands, as well as jazz standards, swing and funk. Recent performances include the biannual Varsity Jazz Off with the Oxford Jazz Orchestra, Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho, London, and the Cambridge Jazz Festival. They have worked with musicians such as Liane Carroll, Ian Shaw, Steve Waterman, Gareth Lockrane, Stan Sulzmann and Laurence Cottle and recent tours have involved performances in Berlin, Budapest, Prague, Istanbul and a CD recording in Bordeaux in 2014.
Mark Armstrong is the Artistic and Musical Director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), a position he has held since 2011, and is a Professor of Jazz at the Royal College of Music. He read Music at Oxford University, then attained an LGSM in Jazz from the Guildhall School of Music. Mark was nominated in the best trumpet category of the 2007 Ronnie Scott Jazz Awards and still performs regularly as a jazz trumpet player, both as a member of the Ronnie Scott Jazz Orchestra and in his own quartet, which released the Album Coastbound in 2010.
