Solar Mamas: Switch Off Week
Fri 14 November 2014
Department of Geography
Produced for BBC4 as part of a 'Why Poverty?' series, 'Solar Mamas' follows the stories of several women from rural communities who train to become solar-energy engineers.
The Barefoot College in India was founded by Bunker Roy to provide knowledge and training to the rural poor to empower them to make their communities self-reliant and sustainable. The solar course at Barefoot College has women from Kenya, Burkina Faso, Columbia, and Guatemala.
The screening will be followed by a talk from Dr Bhaskar Vira, Director of the University of Cambridge Conservation Research Institute (UCCRI). UCCRI highlights the importance of interdisciplinarity within biodiversity conservation, not simply from a science aspect, but including the social and economic perspectives.
