Garden History Lecture with Dr Twigs Way - Art and the History of Plants & Gardens

Fri 10 June 2016

Botanic Garden

Picturing Paradise or Paradise in Pictures?
From still-life to ‘portraits of place’, to places on plates, via Redouté and Monet, plants and gardens appear everywhere in paintings, on decorative china, and even on fans and dresses; whilst in turn sculpture and art objects appear in gardens. This session, led by Dr Twigs Way, will examine this interplay looking at the manner in which gardens and plants are portrayed in art, introducing the close relationship between some artist gardeners, and highlighting the way in which art forms have often been ‘placed’ in gardens and even used to make gardens.

Cost: £35
