Plastic is hitting the headlines with stories about the devastating effect of plastic waste on the environment, with plastic packaging as a particular target. Single-use plastic packaging is now banned in some parts of the world: is this the right response?
Looking at the whole system of food packaging, we find that the problem is very complex. Packaging can save huge amounts of resources if used and disposed of wisely, and the carbon footprint of alternatives can be much higher than plastics. In this talk we will examine the wider environmental consequences of using plastics for packaging, and explore some of the alternatives.
This sixth form physics lecture has 2 parts: at 1600, an Isaac Physics problem solving session takes viewers through problems loosely related to the lecture subject, the the lecture itself will run from 1700 to 1800.
