What about men? Engaging boys and men in gender equality
Thu 6 February 2020
Murray Edwards College
The movement for gender equality and justice has historically been supported and led by women and gender non-conforming individuals. But what about men? Should we engage men in this work? And if so, how?
In the #MeToo era, scholars, practitioners, and activists are increasingly calling for accountability and change. Part of these efforts can involve directly engaging boys and men in gender justice. This panel discussion chaired by Dame Barbara Stocking, President of Murray Edwards College, will explore multiple approaches to engaging men from scholars and practitioners at Cambridge and invite panelists and audience members to reflect upon this critical and contested issue.
Dr Lucy Delap will help contextualize the discussion by providing a historical overview of men’s anti-sexism and pro-feminist work in the UK.
Dr Jill Armstrong will discuss Collaboration with Men, a research project exploring how men and women can work together to transform workplace cultures and promote gender equality in the business and corporate world.
Simon Laver will discuss his work with gender justice initiatives in the HR sector.
And James Elms from the Good Lad Initiative, a UK-based charity that works in Cambridge, will highlight some of his work with university students and clubs to promote positive and healthy masculinities.
The talk will take place 5.30-6.15pm, and will be followed by a drinks reception until 7.30pm.
