The Cambridge University Brass Ensemble (CUBE) returns to the Painted Church once again for a Sunday lunchtime recital in a varied programme for all.

Italian and English Elizabethan music including Tallis’s great 40-voice motet Spem in alium. When Henry VIII sent his agents to Venice to engage for his court the best wind and viol players Europe had to offer, the stage was set for English music to be transformed. Madrigals, fantasias, pavans, galliards – the music at Queen Elizabeth’s court took Italian music to its heart, and blended it with the inherited glories of earlier English music, to produce one of the richest and most evocative repertoires in musical history. This concert will include music of these genres, which will have been studied on this year’s Renaissance music summer school.
