Cambridge Physics Centre presents The Fibre Optic Internet by Dr Seb Savory
Thu 24 January 2019
Cavendish Laboratory
Optical fibres underpin today's internet based society. They carry over 99% of global data traffic but most of the 3 billion km of fibre installed is hidden from view. This lecture will reveal the secrets of this hidden infrastructure: its historic evolution through to the underpinning physics. The intensity of light in an optical fibre, being higher than at the surface of the Sun, is so high that the speed of light in the glass changes. A full fibre internet network coming within the next 15 years, we discuss the technological challenges ahead for the fibre optic internet.
