Revisiting the calendar dispute of 921/2: in search of the manuscripts'
In 921/2 CE, Palestinian and Babylonian Jews disagreed about the calendar, and celebrated Passover and the New Year on different dates. Most of the evidence comes from the Cairo Genizah, and was published at the turn of the 20th century, but the editions were poor, fragments were wrongly joined, and a wholly inadequate historical perspective emerged. Professor Sacha Stern of University College, London, sets out to reconstruct the evidence of this momentous historical event and its aftermath.
Reception from 5:00pm followed by a lecture at 5:30pm.
