Strings of Kashmir
Sat 28 November 2015
Clare Hall college Hall
Clare Hall College in collaboration with CUICAS (Cambridge University Indian Classical Arts Society) proudly presents Strings of Kashmir - a Santoor concert by Kiranpal Singh, who is one of the most distinguished pupils of Shiv Kumar Sharma. The event is open to all members of the public and tickets will be available at the door strictly on a first come, first serve basis.
Santoor is an unique instrument which has as many as 90 -100 strings, and from ancient times has been referred to as the '100 stringed Veena' and its charming and soothing tonal quality is very different from any other classical Indian stringed instruments like Sitar, Sarod, Sarangi etc.
For several centuries, the use of Santoor was solely limited to Sufi music and folk music of the Kashmir valley. However, this changed in the last 50 years when the instrument's greatest maestro and living legend - Shiv Kumar Sharma, for the first time introduced Indian classical music on the Santoor.
