Update
Environmental Policy
The University now has an environmental policy which aims to minimise the environmental impact of the University's activities, as far as practicable, through conservation of natural resources and prevention of environmental pollution. The policy approach includes promotion of sound environmental management policies and practices throughout the University, raising awareness of environmental responsibilities among staff and students, and working with other agencies to promote environmental policies. It includes commitments on waste and pollution, fossil fuel and water use, purchasing, transport, and the University's growth and development and its integration into the local environment.
The policy should help more efficient, effective and economic use of raw materials and energy, minimise waste, and reduce costs. The policy includes a commitment to comply with environmental legislation and officially approved codes of practice, helping to prevent breaches of legislation and enhancing our relationship with external bodies, including the Environment Agency.
Information on the University's environmental policy can be found in a bulletin, Green Lines, available on the World Wide Web, and distributed in paper form.

Cambridge Gliding Club
Earlier this year, the Cambridge University Gliding Club - which has long been open to members of the general public - changed its name to The Cambridge Gliding Club, hoping that anyone who fancies trying the sport will come along.Imagine flying silently above the fields of Cambridgeshire and beyond. We have 4 two-seater gliders, one of which is an open cockpit glider so you really feel as though you are flying. We fly from Gransden Lodge Airfield off the B1046 and keep a look out for aircraft landing as you approach!
A modern glider is capable of cross country flights of up to 1,000km and reaching heights of 38,000ft or more. Obviously to reach these levels takes time and practice but from your first flight, which will probably last about 15 minutes, you will enjoy a unique experience which will never be forgotten. If you feel inspired to carry on after the first trial flight the Cambridge Gliding Club also offers courses tailor made to suit the pilot. The airfield is one of the largest gliding sites in the UK and is designed for easy, safe and efficient training.
There is a large cross section of the public who are members of the club ranging from a British Gliding Champion to the young cadets from local schools who are currently training to go solo. Three evenings a week we try and organise special flying sessions for groups of friends or clubs. From only £15 a head, everyone in the group can experience a short glider flight in dual controlled gliders, accompanied by one of our fully qualified instructors.
The Club is open seven days a week but phone ahead if the weather looks uncertain! Gliding is for the whole family and, although we do not fly the under 12s, there is plenty on the airfield for youngsters to watch and there's a fully enclosed playground for toddlers. Our clubhouse offers a comfortable view of the airfield. For details, telephone our clubhouse on 01767 677077 for a brochure, or just pay a visit anytime.
