Costs and funding

As a graduate student at Cambridge you will be expected to pay fees and provide finance to cover your living costs (maintenance). In some cases students pay all their own costs, but many are supported by awards from charitable foundations, Research Councils, or the University itself. All these awards are competitive, so there is no guarantee that you will win one. You may come across the following terms in applying for awards:

  • Full cost award/Full award - usually covers all fees and living costs (maintenance) for the duration of your course (eg a PhD award is usually for 3 years)

  • Fees-only award - covers fees only (including college fees) for the duration of your course. As a part-cost award, it can be held in conjunction with other awards

  • Bursary - usually a contribution to your living costs. As a part-cost award, it can be held in conjunction with other awards
