Departments and Buildings On Site

Location, Services and Transport

A 2–5 minute walk from the city centre.

Nearby colleges

Downing, Pembroke, Christ's, Emmanuel, Peterhouse, Corpus Christi, St. Catharine's, King's, Queens'.

Traffic

Pembroke Street is one-way, but extremely busy with traffic and bicycles. Corn Exchange street is also one-way, but has lots of traffic from building work on Lion Yard. Free School Lane is generally quiet.

Services and shops

City centre. A sandwich van sells sandwiches and snacks from the car park every weekday lunchtime.

Vehicle entrances

Vehicle entrance off Pembroke Street, signposted Museum of Zoology. Stop at barriers and speak to custodian on left.

Parking

Parking on site is difficult — it is best to park in Lion Yard and walk. There are three designated disabled bays on the site, but these are currently taken by regular users and there is little other parking available.

Other transport options

Central bus station is a five minute walk away up Downing Street. Uni 4 bus stop on Trumpington Street.

General Information

Medical facilities

Several first aiders on site, mostly in the Computing Service.

Emergency procedures

No designated refuge point for the whole site, and no set procedures or facilities for evacuation. Most buildings have their own emergency procedures and facilities in place.

Physical Access

Pedestrian entrances

Pedestrian/cycle entrance off Free School Lane, over cobbles, and with difficult pavements outside. Ramped access to Arts School via Bene't Street gates, open office hours only.

General accessibility

No pavements as such, so be careful of cars. Drains, uneven surfaces, and bicycles are a problem. Access to most buildings is difficult, but usually possible by roundabout routes if you arrange in advance.

Steps and ramps

Quite a few steps, and not many ramps. A couple of wheelchair lifts have been installed.

Benches and seating

None.

Toilets

One disabled toilet with push-button automatic door for general use — follow signs to Hopkinson lecture theatre. Disabled toilet in foyer of Zoology Museum.

Visual Impairments

Signs and wayfinding

Large white-on-blue and white-on-red signs. Wayfinding can be rather complicated, with lots of separate buildings scattered around the site.

Lighting

Very little extra lighting.

Planned Access Improvements

Various buildings have access improvements planned, including the SPS building.
