General Information

The Department of Surgery is embedded in Addenbrooke's Hospital, on Level 9, with good access.

Smoking

No smoking anywhere in the building or on the Addenbrooke's Site.

Medical facilities

First aiders on site. Located within the hospital.

Emergency procedures

An intermittent alarm means you must prepare to evacuate. The Hospital is divided into fire-proof compartments and in the event of a continuous alarm, you should move horizontally through the building to an area where the continuous alarm is not sounding. Refer to departmental safety officer and Addenbrooke's, ward C9, for emergency procedures policy.

Physical Access

Entrances

Level access at main entrance, ramped access at all other entrances. Smooth and carpeted inside.

Number of floors

Ten floors, including basement.

Lifts and stairs

Lift to all floors. Wheelchair access available in bed lifts to all floors. Stairs all have continuous handrails and fold down seats between floors.

Library

Smooth and spacious. Good access as department is all on one level. Staff available to offer help. Plenty of workspace.

Computer facilities

Wireless internet available throughout the department. Computers available for use in the library.

Toilets

No disabled toilets in department itself, but there are plenty in the main hospital building.

Visual Impairments

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs welcome.

Computer facilities

Currently no special hardware or software for visually impaired users. Available on request.

Large print, Braille and audio

Large print information on prior request.

Library and magnification equipment

Staff happy to give any help needed. Photocopier available.

Signs and wayfinding

Good, clear signs around the building. Volunteer staff available around the hospital to offer assistance and directions.

  • Lift has touch-readable buttons and audio information.

Not currently available in the department.

Other

  • Library is open plan, so sound does carry, but the room is small.

Arrangements for members with Specific Learning Difficulties are on an individual basis, in conjunction with the Disability Resource Centre. Any needs can be discussed with the department's Disability Liaison Officer.
