Location, Services and Transport

New Museums Site, near Free School Lane entrance. See separate entry for New Museums Site.

General Information

Small department spread over four floors. See also separate entry for Department of Archaeology, located within the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology on the Downing Site.

Smoking

No smoking anywhere in the building.

Medical facilities

First aiders on site, although not usually in department itself.

Emergency procedures

No evacuation chairs or other specific evacuation facilities, but there is no lift access to the upper floors.

Physical Access

Entrances

Main entrance on Free School Lane has four steps down and no handrail. Level access from back entrance in New Museums Site, through wide double doors.

Number of floors

Five floors in total, including basement.

Lifts and stairs

No lift. Stairs have continuous handrail on one side.

Lecture theatres

Lecture room is at ground level, with easy access from back entrance, plenty of space, and moveable furniture.

Seminar/teaching rooms

Small teaching room on second floor, accessed by stairs only.

Library

Haddon library, along with rest of Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology, is on Downing Site. Lift access available, but first-time visitors please arrange in advance.

Computer facilities

Computer room for post-graduate students is in basement, with access only by stairs.

Toilets

Disabled toilet opposite back entrance, in Phoenix building.

Common rooms

Ground floor common room, with wide door and moveable furniture.

Museum

Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology on Downing Site. Ramped access, spacious and level inside, with large lift to all floors.

Other

  • Reception at ground level.
  • Photocopier at ground level.

Visual Impairments

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs welcome.

Computer facilities

Currently no special hardware or software for visually impaired users.

Large print, Braille and audio

Large print information on prior request.

Library and magnification equipment

Extra lights on individual desks in library. Magnifying glasses and sheets available in library. Photocopier available.

Signs and wayfinding

Good, clear signs. The Department is small, and wayfinding is not a problem.

Hearing Impairments

Induction loops

Induction loops in lecture room and reception.

Other

  • Rooms are small, with soft furnishings and carpets.
