Location, Services and Transport
Sidgwick Site. See separate entry for Sidgwick Site.
General Information
MML is a split site. The main building is the Raised Faculty Building, which is spread over four floors and is mainly offices and small supervision rooms. Some linguistics lectures and supervisions take place in the Faculty of English building at 9, West Road. See separate entry: Faculty of English. Most lectures take place in the Lecture Block — see separate entry.
Smoking
No smoking anywhere in the building.
Medical facilities
First aiders in building.
Emergency procedures
If you feel that you may need assistance in the event of an emergency, please ensure that you report to the Faculty Office in Room 121 upon arrival to the building. In the event of an emergency, you will be escorted to a fire refuge point and according to your Personal / General Emergency Evacuation Plan will be aided in your evacuation procedure by trained staff. An evacuation chair is located in the building but may not be accessible (depending on the location of any incident). There are staff in the building who are trained in its use. Fire wardens will help in the event of a fire. The stairwells at each end of the building are refuge points. Advise the issue desk when you enter and exit the library if you would need help evacuating.
Physical Access
Entrances
A ramp has recently been installed to allow access to the entry level of the building. Level access at the main entrance is through two sets of glass double doors with a push-button opening system. A security swipe card system is used out of hours.
Number of floors
There a four floors, but the ground floor is a lobby only. The first floor has push-button access through the internal corridor doors, but they are located too close to the door on the inward-opening side. They need either to be moved further back or to be activated from a distance by a sensor. This is understood to be currently under review.
Lifts and stairs
Lift to all floors. Winding staircases with handrails.
Lecture theatres
Most lectures take place in Lecture Block — see separate entry.
Seminar/teaching rooms
Department teaching rooms all accessible via lift. Height-adjustable desk in the Graduate Centre.
Library
Over three floors. Level access to first floor. Smooth, carpeted and spacious. Aisles mostly wide, and accessible work areas. Upper floors accessed via internal stairs (with handrails) or external lift and key.
Computer facilities
Twelve networked computers on first floor. Six catalogue computers, at standing height only. Designated laptop area on second floor.
Toilets
Disabled toilets at ground and third floor levels. Another disabled toilet in ladies' toilets outside library, but rather awkward.
Other
- Computer Assisted Language Learning room (CALL) has level access from lift. Fairly small and cramped, especially in cubicles, but possible.
