Location, Services and Transport

New Museums Site. See separate entry for New Museums Site.

General Information

General

Mostly housed in the Arup building, which is fairly new and has good access. Rooms in four other buildings on New Museums site, including some laboratories in the Tower next door, and some on the first and second floors of Austin building.

Smoking

No smoking anywhere in the building.

Medical facilities

Four first aiders in the department. First aid boxes and emergency showers in many places round the building. A safety committee is in charge of safety and medical facilities.

Emergency procedures

Evacuation chairs fitted.

Physical Access

Entrances

Wheelchair lift to ground level and reception. This can usually be operated unaided, but it is best to arrange in advance.

Number of floors

Five floors in main building, including ground floor, and six in Tower.

Lifts and stairs

Large lift in main building reception to all floors except the top floor. Tower building can also be accessed via this lift and the stairs. Large lift in Austin building.

Lecture theatres

Babbage lecture theatre can be accessed via Metallurgy, but arrange in advance as it passes through several heavy doors. Lecture room on first floor of Tower, with level access from lift and moveable furniture.

Seminar/teaching rooms

Laboratories and seminar rooms all accessible by lift.

Library

On fourth floor. Level access through wide doors. Fairly small inside, with narrow aisles and high shelves, but staff will help in office hours. Security keypad access out of hours.

Computer facilities

Some computers on second floor, and a few in library. All accessible.

Toilets

Disabled toilet on ground floor.

Common rooms

Tea room on fourth floor, with tea and coffee making facilities. Level access, with moveable furniture.

Visual Impairments

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs welcome.

Computer facilities

Currently no special hardware or software for visually impaired users.

Large print, Braille and audio

Large print information and lecture notes on prior request.

Library and magnification equipment

Lighting is not very bright, but extra lamps are available if needed. Photocopier available.

Signs and wayfinding

Very little directional signposting or signs. Quite a large building, so make sure you know where you are going.

Other

  • Keypad security system in library is not touch-readable.
