Location, Services and Transport

New Museums Site, with main entrance off Free School Lane. See separate entry for New Museums Site.

General Information

Small, friendly department, with its own Whipple Museum. Some lectures take place in Mill Lane Lecture Rooms or the Arts School. A new lift and disabled toilet have just been fitted.

Smoking

No smoking anywhere in the building.

Medical facilities

First aider in the department.

Emergency procedures

Evacuation chair fitted.

Physical Access

Entrances

Two steps to the main entrance. Temporary ramp available, but call to arrange in advance or ring doorbell for assisted entry.

Number of floors

Three floors in total, including basement. Only the ground floor and basement level are used for teaching.

Lifts and stairs

A lift has recently been installed to enable access to the museum and library levels. There are still steps and stairs to some areas.

Lecture theatres

Most lectures take place in seminar rooms on the ground floor or basement. Some take place in Mill Lane Lecture Rooms or the Arts School — see separate entries.

Seminar/teaching rooms

Ground floor and downstairs seminar rooms accessible, one by lift. Rather cramped, but with moveable furniture.

Library

Next to Whipple Museum. Accessible by lift. Small and rather cramped, but staff will fetch books. A new library is being built in 2007/08, which will improve access.

Computer facilities

Some computers in common room on top floor, accessed only by stairs. Graduate IT room on first floor, accessed by lift.

Toilets

New disabled toilet in Whipple Museum. Other toilets are down several steps, and rather small.

Common rooms

Top floor, accessed only by stairs.

Museum

Whipple Museum. Lift access to all three levels. Smooth and carpeted inside, with plenty of space.

Visual Impairments

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs welcome.

Computer facilities

Currently no special hardware or software for visually impaired users.

Large print, Braille and audio

Large print information on prior request. There is currently no large print information in museum.

Library and magnification equipment

Good lighting in library. Photocopier available.

Signs and wayfinding

Not much signposting, but the department is small. Signs in Whipple museum are rather small.

Other

  • Good lighting in museum. Handling trolley available.

Hearing Impairments

Induction loops

No induction loops in building. Some Mill Lane Lecture Rooms or the theatres in the Arts School have induction loops installed — see separate entries.
