Location, Services and Transport

General Information

Most teaching takes place in the main building, with several lectures in other locations on the Downing Site and some teaching in the Sir William Hardy building — see separate entry. If you have any access requirements, please advise well in advance.

Smoking

No smoking anywhere in the building.

Medical facilities

Three first aiders in the department. Large signs with first aid and emergency numbers on every door.

Emergency procedures

Evacuation chairs fitted. Newly refurbished fire escape and refuges.

Physical Access

Entrances

Several steps, with handrails, to main entrance. Level back entrance with proximity card, through rather heavy double doors.

Number of floors

Five floors in total, including ground floor.

Lifts and stairs

Rather small lift to all floors, recently refurbished. Stairs all have continuous handrails.

Lecture theatres

Small lecture theatre, with hard tiered bench seating. Level access to back, with some space for a wheelchair, and a ramp down to the stage. Some lectures take place in other locations on the site - check in advance if that might be a problem.

Seminar/teaching rooms

Large teaching/exam room on ground floor, smooth, spacious and air conditioned. Seminar room on second floor, accessible by lift and with moveable furniture. Other rooms on ground floors of Craik-Marshall and Sir William Hardy buildings, both accessible.

Library

Small library on first floor, usually staffed during term but check in advance. Level access from lift with proximity card, through two sets of double doors. Very high shelves and rather cramped, but room for a wheelchair.

Computer facilities

Computer rooms with PCs on first floor. Level access from lift, and moveable chairs. Many computers round edge of ground floor teaching room.

Toilets

No disabled toilets in the main building. There is a disabled toilet on the ground floor of the William Hardy building nearby.

Common rooms

First floor of main building, with level access from lift. Low, moveable chairs with armrests. Small kitchens on second and fourth floors.

Other

  • Combined Facility used for work with animals. Ground level, but call in advance to arrange access.

Visual Impairments

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs welcome.

Computer facilities

Currently no special hardware or software for visually impaired users. Some could be acquired if necessary, for either PC or Mac.

Large print, Braille and audio

Large print information on prior request.

Library and magnification equipment

Rather dimly lit Library, with small windows. Photocopiers available in the computer room outside. Magnification equipment could be acquired if necessary.

Signs and wayfinding

Little directional signage in the building. Ask for assistance. Large black and yellow information signs.

Other

  • Large screens for projection and presentations in lecture theatre.
  • Some department members are working in the area of visual impairments and colour perception.

Hearing Impairments

Induction loops

No induction loops currently. There is a PA system in the lecture theatre, but it is not regularly used.

Other

  • Most rooms and areas are small, carpeted and softly furnished.
  • The building is generally quiet.

Specific Learning Difficulties and Mental Health Issues

Arrangements for members with Specific Learning Difficulties are on an individual basis, in conjunction with the Disability Resource Centre. Discuss your needs with the Disability Liaison Officer.

Planned Access Improvements

Refurbishments have recently taken place in the Sir William Hardy building to improve access. Other adaptations can be made according to individual need.
