Use of the building, opened in October 2000, is shared between the University and the Medical Research Council. Two floors are leased to the MRC's Mitochondrial Biology Unit (MBU). Laboratories are mainly used for research by Departments of Haematology, Clinical Biochemistry, Medical Genetics, Pathology, Clinical Neurosciences and Medicine. Good access generally.
Smoking
No smoking anywhere in the building or on site.
Medical facilities
Several first aiders in the department, and a first aid room. Hospital nearby.
Emergency procedures
One lift is an evacuation lift, with marked refuges nearby. There is also an evacuation chair. Emergency phones around building. Individual evacuation plans are drawn up for members with disabilities.
Physical Access

Revolving door, or wide single door, at entrance. Level, with reception and seating area. Level access through goods entrance from car park.

Seven floors in total, including ground floor.
Lifts and stairs
Modern passenger lift and larger goods lift to all floors. All stairs have continuous handrails.

Computer facilities
A few public access computers and laptop network points on each floor, with level access from lift but some in rather awkward spaces.

Common rooms
Cafeteria on top floor. Moveable furniture, of various heights. Crowded at peak times. Small seating areas and kitchens on each floor.
Visual Impairments
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs welcome in lecture and seminar rooms and in offices, but please give prior notice. It would be difficult to allow a dog into a laboratory for health and safety reasons.
Computer facilities
Currently no special hardware or software for visually impaired users. Some could be acquired if necessary.
Large print, Braille and audio
Large print information on prior request. Touch-readable, Braille and audio information in lift.
Signs and wayfinding
Good, clear, black and yellow signs around the building. Large hazard/danger signs.
Other
- Very good lighting generally in all areas of the building.
Hearing Impairments
Induction loops
No induction loops currently.
Other
- The building is fairly open plan and harshly furnished, so open areas can be noisy.
- Cafeteria is carpeted and softly furnished, but again can be noisy at peak times.
Planned Access Improvements
Adaptations can be made as required — please discuss your individual needs well in advance.
