Location, Services and Transport

Parking

Two disabled bays, shared with other nearby buildings. One is kept locked to prevent inappropriate usage, so call in advance to reserve.

General Information

General

Located on third and fourth floors of a building shared with the Centre for Stem Cell Research and the Systems Biology Institute. Postgraduate research only is conducted by the institute. Access for those with severe disabilities could be difficult due to health and safety issues, but each case is decided individually.

Smoking

No smoking anywhere in the building or in the immediate vicinity.

Medical facilities

Three first aiders. A first aid room is available on level 1.

Emergency procedures

Evacuation chairs on two staircases, and trained fire wardens. All members are given full fire induction and practice.

Physical Access

Entrances

Shallow ramp from Tennis Court Road, with handrail. Level entrance through two sets of manual doors with lowered card access on front door. High intercom to reception. Push button exit.

Number of floors

Six floors in total, including basement. Institute located on third and fourth floors of the building.

Lifts and stairs

Passenger lift to all floors.

Seminar/teaching rooms

Meeting and seminar rooms accessible, with moveable furniture. Offices are cramped. Laboratories have level access from lift, but are rather cramped and difficult for wheelchair users. Benches are all at standard height.

Library

Pharmacology library nearby - see separate entry. Level and lift access via main entrance, or three steps directly from third floor of institute.

Computer facilities

All members have their own computers. Some are in the labs due to lack of office space. Advice and equipment to help with RSI available.

Toilets

Newly refurbished disabled toilets in basement and on third floor.

Common rooms

Tea room with small kitchen, level and accessible, with moveable furniture.

Visual Impairments

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs welcome in the building, but not in the labs due to health and safety and contamination issues.

Computer facilities

Currently no special hardware or software for visually impaired users. Some could be acquired if necessary.

Large print, Braille and audio

Large print information on prior request. No touch readable buttons or audio information in lift.

Library and magnification equipment

See separate entry for Department of Pharmacology. Photocopier available at reception.

Signs and wayfinding

Clear hazard signs. Little directional signage, but the building is based on long corridors and wayfinding is not difficult.

Other

  • Good lighting generally, especially in the labs.
  • Paths outside are automatically lit at night.

Hearing Impairments

Induction loops

Induction loops in seminar rooms on levels 1, 2 and 3.

Other

  • Some traffic noise from Tennis Court Road, but generally fairly quiet.
