Location, Services and Transport
Located in Madingley Village, around three miles from the city centre. See the website for maps and travel directions.
Traffic
Madingley Village itself is quiet and peaceful, with little traffic. Madingley Road, however, is always busy at peak times.
Services and shops
Three Horseshoes public house in Madingley Village has a good reputation. There are no other services or shops in the village.
Parking
Sufficient parking. Marked disabled parking at the front of the Hall.
Other transport options
Buses are very infrequent. You are advised to travel by taxi if you are not driving.
General Information
Madingley Hall can accommodate around 90 students for short-term courses at the Institute of Continuing Education, which is based on the site. The Hall can also be hired for training events, conferences and other functions. Access to most areas of the ground floor within the Hall is currently good.
Smoking
No smoking in any building.
Medical facilities
First aiders normally on site.
Emergency procedures
Please advise on your application form if you will need help evacuating in an emergency. Ground level access and egress only.
Accommodation and Catering
Wheelchair-accessible rooms
Three rooms suitable for wheelchair users, all en suite.
Other rooms
All rooms are en suite and many are on the ground floor.
Live-in assistants and assistance dogs
Live-in assistants and assistance dogs possible on prior arrangement.
Early induction and vacation stays
Not applicable. Accommodation for courses is on a fixed short-term basis.
Catering arrangements
Fully catered and served meals. Self-catering would not be possible.
Special diets
Special diets can be catered for. Please inform staff of any dietary requirements upon application.
Physical Access
College grounds in general
Grounds generally level and all areas accessible by wheelchair. Paths are generally gravel.
College buildings in general
Level access to Hall via front entrance. All areas on the ground floor, including the attached courtyard, library and administration buildings, are accessible. There are currently no lifts to the upper floor, but most public areas are at ground level.
Bar
Ground floor of Hall, fairly spacious, with moveable furniture. High bar counter.
Cafeteria
See entry for dining hall. All meals are served.
Chapel
No chapel.
College offices
Administration offices attached to main Hall at ground level, some accessible.
Common rooms
Seating area in bar. Lounge on upper floor, currently accessed only by stairs with a continuous handrail.
Computer facilities
Wireless internet and laptop loanavailable.
Dining hall
Dining hall ground level, spacious, with moveable furniture.
Gardens
Extensive gardens around Hall. All accessible, although the gravel paths and some steep slopes may be difficult for those with impaired mobility.
Laundry
Clothes washing service available on request. Please speak to reception.
Library
Ground floor book store (not a reading library as such) attached to main Hall at ground level. Accessible, but rather cramped.
Porters' lodge and post room
Reception on ground floor of Hall near main entrance, level and accessible. Porter on duty 24 hours. Call 100 from an internal phone to contact reception. Mail posted on noticeboard nearby.
Sport facilities
Croquet lawn, (very) level.
Toilets
Disabled toilet on ground floor of main Hall.
Other
- Teaching and seminar rooms on both ground and upper floors. Sessions can take place at ground level but please inform in advance if this is necessary.
Visual Impairments
Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs welcome. No other dogs allowed.
Large print, Braille and audio
Large print information available. Information in other formats may be possible on request.
Library and magnification equipment
Photocopier available on request.
Signs and wayfinding
Large sign to Hall off main road. Signage around the Hall and grounds is under review, and expected to be improved shortly.
Other
- Most stairs have continuous handrails.
- Lighting around the Hall and in public areas generally good.
- Garden paths are not automatically lit at night, as you are encouraged not to visit these areas in the dark.
Hearing Impairments
Induction loops
Fixed induction loop in reception. Portable loops available. Please inform in advance if you require an induction loop to be used.
Alarms
Vibrating fire pagers available.
Other
- Dining hall rather echoey and can be noisy when busy. Acoustics consultants have advised there is little that can be done to improve acoustics in the dining hall.
- Madingley Hall as a whole is quiet and peaceful, away from traffic and city noise.

Please inform upon application of any Specific Learning Difficulties or support requirements. Support will be given as needed.
Planned Access Improvements
A lift is under consideration for 2011 (funding and permissions dependant).
