Location, Services and Transport

A ten minute walk to the city centre. 20–25 minutes to Downing Site and New Museums Site. 15 minutes to Sidgwick Site and University Library. Close to the Centre for Mathematical Sciences.

Traffic

Lady Margaret Road can get rather busy during rush hour. No pedestrian crossings.

Services and shops.

City centre. Histon Road has supermarkets with car parking, local shops, and a petrol station.

Parking

Parking available on main site, near accommodation and other main buildings. Some marked disabled bays. Car parking permits available.

Other transport options

Uni 4 bus leaves from Grange Road, a 5–10 minute walk away.

General Information

150 mature undergraduates and 180 postgraduates. For women only aged 21 and over. Fairly modern College, founded in the 1960s, known for its open and welcoming attitude towards female students from all backgrounds.

Smoking

No smoking in any building, including student bedrooms. Two designated smoking areas on campus.

Medical facilities

Nurse holds a weekly surgery. Times on the Lucy Cavendish website. Email nurse@lucy-cav.cam.ac.uk

Emergency procedures

Advise porters' lodge if you need help evacuating in an emergency. No special procedures or facilities.

Accommodation and Catering

Wheelchair-accessible rooms

Three rooms adapted for students with physical disabilities. All are en suite, with nearby adapted kitchens.

Other rooms

All accommodation blocks have level access and some ground floor rooms. Many are en suite, particularly in the new accommodation blocks.

Live-in assistants and assistance dogs

Assistants can be accommodated, as there are sets with two double rooms which share a kitchen and bathroom. Dogs can also be accommodated, and there are gardens in which they can exercise.

Early induction and vacation stays

No problem with early induction or staying over the Christmas and Easter vacations. Students intending to stay over the long vacation will need to inform the Domestic Bursar as some on-campus rooms are used for conference guests.

Catering arrangements

Lunch is served in cafeteria every day, and an evening meal three times a week. Formal hall once, sometimes twice, a week. No breakfast served. Every room has access to a kitchen, and self-catering is easy. There are adapted kitchens near the adapted rooms.

Special diets

Special diets and allergies can usually be accommodated. Speak to the catering staff.

Physical Access

College grounds in general

Level entrance from street. Paths are paved or gravel. New concrete path linking Warburton Hall (dining hall) and Strathaird building. New ramp with handrail linking College House and the Porters Lodge. Some paths are uneven and lumpy abd can also be fairly narrow in places. All areas of the College grounds accessible, with few steps.

College buildings in general

Most buildings fully accessible, at least to ground level. College House and Barrmore have one step, otherwise buildings are ramped and have wide doors. Security system at every entrance, operated by proximity card.

Bar

Level access. Smooth and spacious inside, with moveable round tables and chairs. Disabled toilet.

Cafeteria

Self-service cafeteria, with plenty of space. Lift down to cafeteria. Eating takes place in hall next door. Card and cash system for payment.

Chapel

No chapel.

College offices

In College House, which has one step up to entrance. A ramp is under consideration. Other rooms available to meet.

Common rooms

Next to bar. Level access, and disabled toilet in bar.

Computer facilities

In basement of library, accessible via lift. Disabled toilet upstairs in library. All rooms networked.

Dining hall

Large lift down to hall. Smooth and spacious, with moveable tables and chairs. Disabled toilet.

Fellows' areas

SCR has level access.

Gardens

In College site. Paths are rather uneven, lumpy and narrow. Some gravel. Some benches.

Laundry

Level access, through a narrow door.

Library

Lift to all levels. Rather narrow and stiff double doors into bookshelves themselves. Staff will help fetch books during working hours. Disabled toilet.

Porters' lodge and post room

In brand new extension. Level access through wide door. No problems.

Sport facilities

Gym on ground floor of Oldham Hall. Accessible. No sports fields.

Toilets

Disabled toilets in bar, hall, library and Strathaird building.

Other

  • Music pavilion up one step. A ramp is under consideration.
  • Strathaird building is often used for conferences and meetings. Level access to ground floor. Disabled toilet.

Visual Impairments

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs welcome. Gardens available for exercise.

Computer facilities

Special hardware or software for visually impaired users could be acquired if necessary.

Large print, Braille and audio

Large print letters and information on request.

Library and magnification equipment

No special facilities for text enlargement. Big windows, and very well lit. Good contrast of furniture.

Signs and wayfinding

Good signs on buildings themselves, little signage between buildings but large campus map outside porters' lodge.

Other

  • Lighting around College at night is good, with lights activated by motion sensors.
  • Lighting in most buildings good. Hall, bar and library all have large windows.

Hearing Impairments

Induction loops

No induction loops currently. Can be hired or bought if required.

Alarms

No visual or sensory alarms currently.

Other

  • Traffic noise is mostly cut out by trees. The College is generally quiet and peaceful.

Specific Learning Difficulties and Mental Health Issues

  • Arrangements for students with Specific Learning Difficulties are on an individual basis, in conjunction with the Disability Resource Centre. Discuss your needs with your tutor.
  • Special fund available to help students with dyslexia.

Planned Access Improvements

  • Ramps for College House and music pavilion are under consideration.
  • Library doors may be replaced.
