Location, Services and Transport

City centre. It is a 5–10 minute walk to the Downing Site and New Museums Site. 10–15 minutes to Sidgwick Site, via a busy road, and University Library. Leckhampton, the postgraduate site, is located on Grange Road approximately one mile from the city centre.

Traffic

King's Parade is busy with cars and bicycles. Dangerous junction with Silver Street and Trumpington Street. Quieter access to the College via Free School Lane.

Parking

Very limited. Some disabled bays on King's Parade and in Lion Yard car park. Parking is possible for graduates housed in Leckhampton.

Other transport options

Uni 4 bus stop in Trumpington Street. The Uni 4 bus service can be used to travel to Leckhampton as an alternative to walking or cycling.

General Information

250 undergraduates and 150 postgraduates. For men and women. Main site in city centre has undergraduate accommodation on site or nearby. Leckhampton, off Cranmer road, is the main postgraduate site. An access audit has been completed.

Smoking

Smoke-free policy in place. A number of student rooms are designated as non-smoking on the main College site, as are all rooms in Botolph Court, Newnham House and the Trumpington Street hostels.

Medical facilities

No nurse or other medical facilities, but the College is associated with the Trumpington Street surgery nearby.

Emergency procedures

Evacuation needs are taken into account when choosing student rooms. Practice fire drills are obligatory, and individual needs would be discussed.

Accommodation and Catering

Wheelchair-accessible rooms

Accessible flat in Bene't Street hostel, with fully adapted bathroom and kitchen. Two adapted rooms in Beldam hostel, behind the Eagle pub, with adapted kitchen on the same level. One ground floor adapted room in Leckhampton for postgraduate students.

Other rooms

If you have special access needs the College is happy to discuss these with you to see how they can be best met.

Live-in assistants and assistance dogs

Both assistants and dogs have been accommodated in the past. Please discuss your needs well in advance.

Early induction and vacation stays

Early induction is possible. It is possible to stay in your room during vacations, at usual room rates. Postgraduate leases are for 12 months rather than termly.

Catering arrangements

Meals usually taken in hall. Kitchens generally small and not suitable for full self catering, except in and near adapted rooms. Postgraduate accommodation offers facilities for self-catering. Limited range of meals available in Leckhampton.

Special diets

Please discuss any special diets with catering staff, who are usually flexible. No problems with vegetarian, vegan, gluten and dairy free. Nut policy in place.

Physical Access

College grounds in general

Four large steps, with no handrail, up to main entrance. Level access via Stable Yard side entrance until 5pm. Level access also possible via Bursar's garden off Free School Lane. Fairly smooth paving slabs, with some cobbles.

College buildings in general

Most buildings in New Court have two steps. Temporary metal ramps are available, and more permanent wooden ramps can be put in place if necessary. Most areas accessible. Leckhampton House, dining room, and ground floor toilet are accessible.

Bar

Level access from Old Court. Two steps down from C passageway, off New Court. Two steps divide bar area in middle. Rather small, but with moveable furniture. Disabled toilet in C passage, up two steps from bar. The bar at Leckhampton is accessible.

Cafeteria

Large flight of stairs, with handrail. Accessible via large service lift off Old Court. Please arrange with the head chef in advance. Meals eaten in hall.

Chapel

Two small steps off New Court. Temporary ramp available. Large entrance doors can be rather stiff. Fixed pews.

College offices

Two steps up from New Court. Temporary ramp available. Tutorial office is up a narrow flight of stairs, but the ground floor Gillingham room can be used for tutorial sessions.

Common rooms

JCR two steps up from New Court. Temporary ramp available. Smooth and spacious inside. TV room adjacent to JCR.

Computer facilities

Located at back of JCR, with security swipecard system. Two steps up from New Court, temporary ramp available. A few doors to negotiate. The computer room at Leckhampton is accessible for those in wheelchairs with some assistance.

Dining hall

As per cafeteria — large service lift off Old Court. Catering department will arrange appropriate seating for wheelchairs. Leckhampton dining hall on ground floor.

Fellows' areas

Old common room and New common room for Fellows are upstairs, with no easy access.

Gardens

Level access to Bursar's garden from Free School Lane and B passage on main site. Quiet, grassed area with one bench seat.

Laundry

Located in the Beldam building, Bene't Street. A few doors to negotiate. The laundry at Leckhampton is located opposite the main house.

Library

Two steps up from New Court. Temporary ramp available. Security swipe card entry. Level and spacious. Fixed workspaces, moveable chairs. Disabled toilet. Manuscript library upstairs, with no easy access. New student reference library currently under construction.

Porters' lodge and post room

Two large steps up to the lodge from New Court, with no handrail. Porters will come outside to help. Mail room up two steps opposite JCR. Temporary ramp available. Mail room opened by key.

Sport facilities

Gym located at Leckhampton, temporarily in a ground floor squash court. Induction and special key required. Sports field located at Leckhampton. Several steps up to pavilion, but Leckhampton disabled toilet can be used.

Toilets

Disabled toilet in C passage off New Court, in McCrum lecture theatre at bottom of Beldam building, and in Leckhampton House. Disabled toilets and showers in passage between Stable Yard and Hostel Yard.

Other

  • McCrum lecture theatre, located behind the Eagle pub on Bene't Street. Access via cobbled yard. Ground floor, with wheelchair lift to auditorium. Stage and one section of seating are accessible. Disabled toilet.
  • Small reference library at Leckhampton, accessible with some assistance.

Assistance dogs have been accommodated in the past.

Computer facilities

All computers have 17 inch flat screen monitors. Special software can be installed if needed.

Large print, Braille and audio

No large print or Braille currently.

Library and magnification equipment

The Parker library, above main Butler library, has an electronic illuminated magnifier. Computers in library are only for online catalogues. Lighting good.

Signs and wayfinding

Very little signage around College site, but this is under review. Site is not large, so wayfinding is generally not a problem.

Other

  • Bar is very dimly lit. Beware the unmarked steps immediately after the C passage door, and in the middle of the bar area.
  • Most steps around College unmarked, and few handrails. A few worn and twisty staircases.

Hearing Impairments

Induction loops

Induction loops in porters' lodge and in McCrum theatre.

Alarms

Portable visual and sensory alarms available.

Other

  • Library is extremely quiet, and softly furnished.
  • JCR is softly furnished and tends to be a quiet area. Bar is small, and very noisy when busy.

Arrangements for students with Specific Learning Difficulties are on an individual basis, in conjunction with the Disability Resource Centre. Discuss your needs with your tutor.
