In 2009 the AHRC changed the way in which it offered funding to postgraduate students in the arts and humanities. Students no longer apply to the AHRC direct, but apply to their department at Cambridge University for an award.
Supporting information on the administration of AHRC awards can be found under 'Support for Award Holders'.
AHRC Block Grant Partnership scheme
Block Grant Partnerships (BGPs) are awards held by certain research organisations for a period of 5 years, starting with students commencing their studies in October 2009. A list of organisations holding BGPs, along with the subject areas in which they can offer studentships is available on the AHRC website.
There is an internal competition at Cambridge for these awards - apply within Section B of the GRADSAF (Application for Funding), submitting your application by Friday 13 January 2012, or the particular course closing date, whichever is earlier.
It is important that you send in your supporting documentation as soon as possible after you have applied for admission online, because your application will not be looked at until this is received.
Students must meet the admissions criteria of the University and the AHRC's eligibility criteria.
The AHRC offers awards for both Masters-level and doctoral study:
- The Research Preparation Master’s Scheme provides support for students intending to proceed to doctoral study, who are undertaking a Master’s course that will prepare them for doctoral study. AHRC expects these students to gain a Master’s qualification at the end of their AHRC award.
- The Professional Preparation Master’s Scheme provides support for students intending to proceed to a career in professional practice, who are undertaking a Master’s or Postgraduate Diploma course which will prepare them specifically for that professional practice. At Cambridge, this award is applicable for the LLM course and the Hamilton Kerr Institute only.
- The Doctoral Awards Scheme provides support for students undertaking doctoral study. Students should apply through this scheme even if their initial registration is as a probationary student.
