The MPhil in Music Studies is an integrated programme with tracks in Musicology; Theory, analysis and criticism; Ethnomusicology; Jazz, popular and media music; Performance. studies; Music and science; and Composition. Teaching is through supervisions and seminars, and assessment is by course work and an extended project.

Additional fees
Students taking the Ethnomusicology track of the MPhil may opt to carry out fieldwork, in which case you are strongly advised to make an additional financial provision of up to £1,000. Students taking the Performance Studies track of the MPhil may opt to take a Recital option, in which case you will be required to pay for instrumental or vocal lessons at an approximate additional cost of £1,200.

MMus in Choral Studies

The M. Mus. aims to train musicians in the art of choral conducting; to instruct them in diverse aspects of the history and practice of choral music, with particular reference to theology and liturgy; to provide the opportunity to learn the technical skills required to work with historic repertoires and to develop organ playing skills as both soloist and accompanist; to offer direct access to, and the experience of working alongside, the daily activities of the leading College choirs of the University.

Graduate research in the Faculty of Music is centred on individual scholarly activity in fields such as historical musicology, analysis, ethnomusicology, performance studies and music cognition. Doctoral students work in close contact with one or more leading researchers in their field as well as participating in programmes of skills training and colloquia; there are also opportunities to gain experience in teaching.
The overwhelming majority of graduate students in the Faculty are undertaking research that is directly connected with the special research interests of members of the Faculty. Intending applicants are strongly advised to make contact with a prospective supervisor prior to making a formal application in order to discuss the feasibility of their proposed research.
