Courses with Taught Elements
MPhil in Advanced Computer Science
Length and dates of course:
9 months from October
Application deadline:
31 March
Academic requirement:
1st class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject such as engineering, computer science or mathematics. Mathematics to A-level standard. Some programming experience
English language requirement: See table of specific scores needed for this course
Course code: CSM3
The aim of the course is to provide preparation appropriate for undertaking a PhD programme in computer science. There are two formats, depending on whether a substantial research project or shorter research essay is chosen:
Option A: 9 taught modules and an essay
Option B: 6 taught modules and a research project
Research topic selection and planning occurs in the first term and the work is undertaken in subsequent terms.
The taught modules are delivered in a range of styles. For example, there are traditional lecture courses, lecture courses with associated practical classes, reading clubs, and seminar style modules.

Research Programmes
PhD in Computer Science
Application deadline:
30 June (re-opened, was previously 31 March), 30 September and 31 December for starts in October, January and April respectively
Academic requirement:
Applicants must have a 1st class honours degree or equivalent; a Masters-level degree (or other post-graduate work) is highly desirable
English language requirement: See table of specific scores needed for this course
Course code: CSC1 (CPGS in Computer Science)
Fee rate: Science
All research students are admitted to read for the PhD Degree on a probationary basis and most will be registered for the Certificate of Postgraduate Study (CPGS) in the first instance. During this year students may do some additional coursework and will write a research report that is likely to form the foundation of the eventual PhD dissertation.
The CPGS will involve four components:
Research Skills training
Practical work
Research report of no more than 10,000 words
Attendance at a research workshops and research seminars
At the end of the third term and on completion of the CPGS, students whose performance indicates that they would be able to complete a PhD in reasonable time will be upgraded to PhD status. A student who is not upgraded to PhD status will normally be awarded the CPGS (as will a student who is upgraded to PhD status) but will leave before submitting a PhD dissertation. Once upgraded to PhD status, a student concentrates on their PhD research and dissertation in the second and third years. Students are expected to submit shortly after the end of their third year.
