Regulations for Examinations

Classical Tripos, Part II

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 301)

With effect from 1 October 2020

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Classics, has approved the following additions to the Schedule of Optional Papers for Part II of the Classical Tripos:

Schedule of Optional Papers

By adding the following papers to the Schedule:

Paper O13.

Myth matters: Receptions of mythology in Modern Greek literature and culture (Paper Gr.6a of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos)

Paper O14.

Aesthetics (Paper 11 in Part II of the Philosophy Tripos)

The Faculty Board of Classics is satisfied that no candidate’s preparation for the examination will be adversely affected.

Medical Sciences Tripos, Part Ib

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 395)

With effect from 1 October 2020

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Boards of Biology and Clinical Medicine, has approved the amendment of Regulation 20(a)(i) of the Medical Sciences Tripos to split the current single written paper for Biology of Disease into two written papers, bringing the Section I examination in line with that for Mechanisms of Drug Action, and providing clarity on the length of time to be allocated to answering Section I and Section III.

Regulation 20.

By amending sub-section (i) of section (a) of the regulation (retaining the existing footnote text) to read as follows:

(i)two written papers, one of one and a half hours, which shall contain compulsory short-answer questions (Section I)1 and one of two hours, which shall contain essay questions (Section III);

Veterinary Sciences Tripos, Part Ib

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 443)

With effect from 1 October 2020

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Boards of Biology and Veterinary Medicine, has approved amendments to Regulation 20 of the Veterinary Sciences Tripos so as to split the current single written paper for Biology of Disease into two written papers and amending and clarifying the length of time allocated to answering Section I and Section III, and generally to align the regulation with current practice.

Regulation 20.

By amending sub-section (i) of section (a) of the regulation (retaining the existing footnote text) to read as follows:

(i)two written papers, one of one and a half hours, which shall contain compulsory short-answer questions (Section I)2 and one of two hours, which shall contain essay questions (Section III);

And by removing the entirety of sections (d) and (g) from the regulation and renumbering the remaining sections.

Master of Education

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 470)

With effect from 1 October 2020

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Education, has approved an amendment to the regulations for the degree of Master of Education so as to reduce the word count of the Option B dissertation and essays and to clarify assessment on the Transforming Practice pathway (see Reporter, 6551, 2018–19, p. 672).

Regulation 11.

By amending the first sentence by deleting the word ‘either’ and adding ‘or Option C’ after ‘Option B’.

Option B

By amending in requirement (i) the length of the dissertation from 20,000 to 15,000 words in length, and by amending the wording of requirement (ii) to read: ‘two essays, one of not more than 4,000 words in length, and one of 4,000–6,000 words in length, on topics specified or approved by the Degree Committee.’

Option C

By adding a new Option C to read as follows:

Option C (Transforming Practice only)

The examination shall consist of:

(i)a dissertation of not more than 12,000 words in length excluding footnotes, tables, appendices and bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee, and a two-page plan and oral presentation on the dissertation;

(ii)an essay of not more than 2,000 words on a topic to be approved by the Degree Committee.

Second M.B. Examination

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 485)

With effect from 1 October 2020

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Boards of Biology and Clinical Medicine, has approved the amendment of Regulation 10(a) for the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery to change the duration of the examinations for the Section I papers for certain subjects of the Second M.B. Examination from one hour to one and a half hours.

Regulation 10.

By amending section (a) of the regulation to read as follows:

(a)the examinations in BOD, HOM, and MIMS shall each consist of a written paper of one and a half hours, which shall contain compulsory short-answer questions (Section I), and a practical examination of two hours (Section II).

Education for the M.Phil. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 533)

With effect from 1 October 2020

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Education, has approved the amendment of the special regulations for the course in Education for the degree of Master of Philosophy to reduce the length of the dissertation and essays required by the examination as follows:

By amending in sub-paragraph (a) the length of the dissertation from 20,000 to 15,000 words in length.

By amending the text of sub-paragraph (b) to read as follows:

(b)two essays, one of not more than 4,000 words in length, and one of 4,000–6,000 words in length, on topics specified or approved by the Degree Committee.

Cancer Biology for the M.Res. Degree

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 557)

With effect from 1 October 2020

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, has approved a change in title for the Cancer Biology course for the degree of Master of Research to provide clarity for potential applicants. The course will be titled ‘Cancer Biology for Clinician Scientists’ and the special regulations updated as follows:

By amending the heading of the special regulations for Cancer Biology to ‘Cancer Biology for Clinician Scientists’.

And by inserting the words ‘for Clinician Scientists’ after ‘Cancer Biology’ in the first sentence.

Second Vet.M.B. Examination

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 575)

With effect from 1 October 2020

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Boards of Biology and Veterinary Medicine, has approved the amendment of Regulation 7(a) for the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine to change the duration of the examinations for the Section I papers for certain subjects of the Second Vet.M.B. Examination from one hour to one and a half hours.

Regulation 7.

By amending section (a) of the regulation to read as follows:

(a)the examinations in BOD, HOM, MIMS, and VAP shall each consist of a written paper of one and a half hours, which shall contain compulsory short-answer questions (Section I), and a practical examination of two hours (Section II).
