Regulations for examinations

Human, Social and Political Sciences Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 356)

With effect from 1 October 2019

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Human, Social and Political Science, has approved amendments to the regulations so as to remove references to assessment methods which will be done instead by Form and Conduct notices, ensure that students have a balanced assessment and take papers with examination and dissertation elements, specify which Head of Department can approve single track and joint track dissertations, introduce optional papers from the Archaeology Tripos to replace some Biological Anthropology papers and to widen student choice, change paper titles to provide a more accurate description of the papers and replace a no longer available Faculty of Education paper with an available one.

Regulation 11, Section A.

By amending the title of Paper SOC1 from ‘Modern Societies I: introduction to sociology’ to ‘Introduction to sociology: Modern societies I’.

Regulation 15.

By amending the titles of certain papers, retaining where applicable the shared paper references, to read as follows:

POL5.

Themes and issues in politics and international relations (also serves as an optional paper for Part Ib of the History and Politics Tripos)

POL19.

Themes and issues in politics and international relations II

POL20.

A subject in politics and international relations VIII

POL21.

A subject in politics and international relations IX

SOC14.

A subject in sociology IX

And, under Social Anthropology,

(i)by inserting a footnote to the sub-heading ‘Special subjects in social anthropology’ so as to read ‘Three or four of these papers will be available each year, as announced by the Department by the end of Easter Term in the previous academic year’; and

(ii)by removing the footnote from the following individual papers: SAN7, SAN8, SAN9, SAN10 and SAN14.

Regulation 16.

By amending Regulation 16 so as to read:

16. Each paper shall be assessed either by a three-hour examination or by a combination of two or more of the following: a coursework portfolio; an essay of not more than 5,000 words; a two-hour examination. The mode of examination for each paper, and details of any coursework or essays required, and about the arrangements for their submission, shall be published by the Faculty Board not later than the beginning of the Michaelmas Term.

Regulation 17.

By amending Regulation 17(c)(iv) so as to read:

(iv)one paper chosen from the following list: Papers A1, A3, B1–B41 and A11 from the Archaeology Tripos, POL5–6, SAN7–14, SOC2–3, Paper 10 or Paper 11 from Part I of the Historical Tripos, Paper 1 or Paper 2 for the subject History and Philosophy of Science in Part Ib of the Natural Sciences Tripos, Papers PBS3–4 of the Psychological and Behavioural Sciences Tripos.

  • 1Papers A1, A3 and B1 are only available to candidates in Part II if they did not take the paper in Part I.

By amending Regulation 17(e)(iv) so as to read:

(iv)one paper chosen from the following list: Papers A1, A3, B1–B41 and A11 from the Archaeology Tripos, POL3–4, SAN7–14, SOC4–5, Paper 10 or Paper 11 from Part I of the Historical Tripos, Paper 1 or Paper 2 for the subject History and Philosophy of Science in Part Ib of the Natural Sciences Tripos, Papers PBS3–4 of the Psychological and Behavioural Sciences Tripos, Paper ED3 in Part Ib of the Education Tripos.

  • 1Papers A1, A3 and B1 are only available to candidates in Part II if they did not take the paper in Part I.

Regulation 18.

By replacing at the end of the second sentence, the text ‘papers and other exercises as follows’ with ‘four papers, of which at least three shall be assessed by written examination, either in part or in whole:’

And by amending Regulation 18(c) so as to read:

(c) Candidates in Politics and International Relations

(i)POL9;

(ii)two papers chosen from POL10–21; one paper may be substituted by a dissertation on a subject approved by the Head of the Department of Politics and International Studies, which shall be submitted in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 19;

(iii)one paper chosen from the following: A14–18 and B2–B41 from Part II of the Archaeology Tripos, SAN7–142, SOC6–153, Paper 5 or Paper 6 for the subject History and Philosophy of Science in Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos, Paper 6 from Part II of the Historical Tripos, Paper 8 borrowed from Part II of the Economics Tripos, or a further paper chosen from POL64 and POL10–215.

Footnotes:

  • 1Papers B2–B4 are only available to candidates if they did not take the paper in Part IIa.

  • 2Papers SAN7–14 are only available to candidates if they did not take the paper in Part IIa, and candidates eligible for SAN4 may only choose a SAN4 ethnographic area paper that they have not taken in Part IIa.

  • 3Paper SOC6 can only be taken if a candidate has taken Paper SOC2 in Part IIa.

  • 4POL6 is only available to candidates if they did not take the paper in Part IIa.

  • 5Paper POL10 cannot be taken if a candidate has taken Paper POL8 in Part IIa.

And by replacing in Regulation 18(d)(ii) the text ‘the subject the dissertation is in’ with ‘Social Anthropology’.

And by removing Regulation 18(d)(iv).

And by amending Regulation 18(e) so as to read:

(e) Candidates in Sociology

(i)one paper chosen from SOC5–131, 2;

(ii)two further papers chosen from SOC5–151, 2, one of which may be substituted by a dissertation on a subject approved by the Head of the Department of Sociology, which shall be submitted in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 19;

(iii)one paper chosen from the following list: A14–18, A61 and B2–B43 from Part II of the Archaeology Tripos, POL134, POL174, SAN7–145, Papers PBS6–9 of the Psychological and Behavioural Sciences Tripos, a further paper chosen from SOC5–15.

  • 1Paper SOC5 is only available to candidates if they did not take the paper in Part IIa.

  • 2Paper SOC6 can only be taken if a candidate has taken Paper SOC2 in Part IIa.

  • 3Papers B2–B4 are only available to candidates if they did not take the paper in Part IIa.

  • 4Papers POL13 and POL17 may only be taken if candidates have taken POL3 or POL4 in Part IIa.

  • 5Papers SAN7–14 are only available to candidates if they did not take the paper in Part IIa, and candidates eligible for SAN4 may only choose a SAN4 ethnographic area paper that they have not taken in Part IIa.

And by amending Regulation 18(h) so as to read:

(h) Candidates in Politics and Sociology

(i)two papers chosen from POL6, POL10–211;

(ii)two papers chosen from SOC5–152, 3, 4;

(iii)a candidate may substitute for one paper a dissertation on a subject within the field of Politics or Sociology approved by the Head of the relevant Department, which shall be submitted in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 19.

(iii)a candidate may substitute for one paper a dissertation on a subject within the field of Social Anthropology or Politics approved by the Head of the relevant Department, which shall be submitted in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 19.

And by amending Regulation 18(k)(iv) so as to read:

(iv)a candidate may substitute for one paper a dissertation on a subject within the field of Sociology or Criminology approved by the Head of the relevant Department, which shall be submitted in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 19.

And by amending Regulation 18(l)(iii) so as to read:

(iii)a candidate may substitute for one paper a dissertation on a subject within the field of Sociology or Social Anthropology approved by the Head of the relevant Department, which shall be submitted in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 19.

And by replacing the last sentence of Regulation 19(a) with the following text:

Applications shall be submitted to the Head of the relevant Department in which the dissertation will be examined so as to arrive not later than the division of the Full Michaelmas Term next preceding the examination.
