Graces

Graces submitted to the Regent House on 7 November 2018

The Council submits the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, unless they are withdrawn or a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 105) will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 16 November 2018.

1. That the amendments to the regulations for Entries and Lists of Candidates for Examinations (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 246) and for the Dates of Examinations and Publication of Class-lists (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 249), as set out in the Annex to the General Board’s Notice dated 5 November 2018 (p. 109), be approved.

2. That the dates on which the examinations for Part Ia of the Classical Tripos, and Parts IIa and IIb of the Engineering Tripos shall begin in 2019 shall be the first day of Full Easter Term.1

3. That a P. C. Ho Fund be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations.2

P. C. Ho Fund

1. The benefaction received from the Huo Family Foundation, together with such other sums as may be received or applied for the same purpose, shall form an endowment fund called the P. C. Ho Fund to support Ph.D. students studying Physics in the University to be named the P. C. Ho Ph.D. Studentships.

2. The Managers shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund and the application of its income and shall comprise:

(a)the Head of the Department of Physics, who shall be Chair;

(b)two members of the Faculty of Physics and Chemistry appointed by the Council of the School of the Physical Sciences.

3. Subject to Regulation 4, the income of the Fund shall be used to provide awards, which shall be called the P. C. Ho Ph.D. Studentships. Arrangements for awards, including the number, tenure, and conditions of Studentships to be awarded in any given year, the expenses to be covered by an award, and the form of the application and selection processes, shall be at the discretion of the Managers and may provide for applications by persons who are not yet members of the University and for the financial circumstances of candidates to be taken into consideration. In exercising their discretion, the Managers shall have regard to the preference of the Huo Family Foundation for the award of at least one full studentship in any given year.

4. Any unexpended income in any financial year may, at the discretion of the Managers, be awarded to support Graduate Students studying Physics in the University in any one or more subsequent financial years.

4. That the BP Professorship of Chemistry (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 700) be retitled the 'Yusuf Hamied 1702 Professor of Chemistry' and the British Petroleum Chemistry Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 792) be retitled as the 'Yusuf Hamied 1702 Chemistry Fund' and the following amendments to Regulations 1 and 2 governing the Fund be approved:2

1. The sum of £1.5m received from British Petroleum plc and the sum of £2.5m received from Dr Yusuf K. Hamied for the support of work in Chemistry shall form a fund called the Yusuf Hamied 1702 Chemistry Fund. The Managers of the Fund shall be:

(a)the Head of the Department of Chemistry, who shall be the Chair;

(b)the Yusuf Hamied 1702 Professor of Chemistry;

(c)a person appointed by the General Board on the nomination of British Petroleum plc.

2. The first charge on the income of the Fund shall be the stipend, national insurance, and pension contributions of the Yusuf Hamied 1702 Professor payable by the University.

5. That the following regulations for the Gavin Boyle Fellowships in Cosmology and Exoplanetary Research be approved and inserted in the regulations for the Kavli Institute Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 876):2

Gavin Boyle Fellowships in Cosmology and Exoplanetary Research

1. The benefaction received from Gavin Boyle, to be held as endowment in the Kavli Institute Fund, shall be used to advance research in the field of cosmology and exoplanetary research by supporting a postdoctoral research fellowship to be called the Gavin Boyle Fellowship in Cosmology and Exoplanetary Research at the Kavli Institute for Cosmology.

2. The income arising from the part of the endowment of the Fund representing the Gavin Boyle benefaction shall be applied, together with other income from the Fund, towards the payment of the stipend, national insurance, pension contributions, and associated indirect costs of the Gavin Boyle Fellowship payable by the University. Elections to the Fellowship shall be made by the Managers upon such terms as the Managers shall determine.

3. Any unexpended income in any financial year may, at the discretion of the Managers, be carried forward for use as income in accordance with Regulation 2 in any one or more subsequent financial years.

  • 1This change is being made on the recommendation of the Chairs of Examiners for the Classical Tripos, Part Ia,and for the Engineering Tripos, Parts IIaand IIb, and delays the start date of those examinations by one day so that they do not start on Easter Monday, which in 2019 falls on the Monday before the first day of Full Easter Term, the date the examinations are due to begin (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 249).
