Report of the General Board on the establishment of certain Professorships*

The General Board begs leave to report to the University as follows:

1. The General Board recommends the establishment of a Professorship of Accounting and a Professorship of Public Health and Microbiology. The funding arrangements for these Professorships, as set out in paragraphs 2 and 3 below, were approved by circulation by the Resource Management Committee on 17 October 2018.

2. The Board has accepted an academic case from the Council of the School of Technology for the establishment, from 1 October 2019, of a Professorship of Accounting in the Judge Business School. The full salary costs of the Professorship will be met from a combination of funds available to the Judge Business School including its recurrent Chest allocation, and income generated by the M.B.A. and Master of Finance Degree and Executive Education programmes. The Board has agreed that election to the Professorship should be made by an ad hoc Board of Electors and that the candidature should be open to all persons whose work falls within the general field of the title of the office.

3. The Board has accepted an academic case from the Council of the School of Clinical Medicine for the establishment for a single tenure, from 10 December 2018, of a Professorship of Public Health and Microbiology in the Department of Medicine. The full salary costs of the Professorship will be funded by Public Health England for up to seven years and therefore the tenure of the office will be limited to the duration of the external funding available. The intended holder of the Professorship of Public Health and Microbiology will be Professor Sharon Peacock. In addition to pursuing a personal research programme, the post-holder will lead Public Health England’s research strategy in infectious diseases and microbiology, thereby fostering collaboration between the Department of Pathology, the Veterinary School, and the Cambridge Infectious Diseases Interdisciplinary Research Centre.

4.The General Board recommends:

I.That a Professorship of Accounting be established* in the University from 1 October 2019, placed in the Schedule to Special Ordinance C (vii) 1, and assigned to the Judge Business School.

II.That a Professorship of Public Health and Microbiology be established in the University for Professor Sharon Peacock for the duration of the external funding available or seven years, whichever is the longer, from 10 December 2018, placed in the Schedule to Special Ordinance C (vii) 1, and assigned to the Department of Medicine.

    Correction

  • *14/11/2018: As noted in the correction notice published on 14 November 2018 (Reporter, 6526, 2018–19, p. 117), the Professorship of Accounting is to be established in perpetuity and not, as originally stated in Recommendation I, for a single tenure. The text of the online and pdf versions has been amended accordingly.
